We celebrate World Water Day this month and as a ‘water scarce’ country with persistent drought affecting many of us across the country, we offer some suggestions on how we can all do something to preserve this most precious resource. Making some small changes in our lives to save water can have a big impact not just today, but every day.
Start by being mindful of how much water you’re using, when you’re using it. A tap left running while you brush your teeth uses about 20-30 litres of water per minute. Assuming that you brush your teeth for two minutes, every morning and night, then you’re letting almost 2,500 litres of clean water go down the drain a year! Turn the tap on only when you need it, whether you’re brushing your teeth, washing your face or shaving to reduce the amount of water you use every day.
Repairing leaking taps and toilets, and replacing broken fittings is the quickest way to save water, and your money in the long term. Aside from the annoying sound of dripping water, that leaky tap could be wasting up to 3,500 litres of water a month, which equates to almost 40,000 litres a year. Losing the drip makes good sense for the planet and your pocket every day.
Whilst a bath is a lovely way to unwind, taking a stand in the shower instead, can shave litres of water off your monthly bill. Look at the numbers, a 5-minute shower using a water-saving showerhead uses about 32 litres versus 150- 200 litres of water to fill a bathtub. If you do run a bath, then remember that sharing is caring.
Spending money on installing an aerator on your tap, or to replace your old taps with ones that have a built-in aerator, is an investment that will pay for itself over time. Aerators reduce the water flow to 6-10 litres a minute, so you use less water every time you use it.
Having potplants in your bathroom is a great way to embrace the botanical design trend. Keep a watering can or a bucket handy to collect the cold water while you wait for it to get hot and use this to water the wonderful greenery in your space. You’ll be using water wisely and saving yourself some money all while being uber trendy!
Join us as we celebrate World Water Day on the 22nd March and remember that the small changes that we make today, can make a big difference to saving our valuable water for everyone, every day.
